Women Giving for Spartanburg grant helps fund new playground obstacle course

July 12, 2017

Students at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind will soon have an obstacle course to encourage fitness and promote healthy lifestyles. A grant from Women Giving for Spartanburg will help make the course a reality. Women Giving recently made a contribution of $39,876 toward a new playground that will include a “fitness loop,” an accessible obstacle course designed to promote healthy lifestyles. The loop will be used during school day recesses and physical education classes as well as after-school programs.

“Fitness can be a challenge for our students,” said Ann Akerman, chief executive officer of the school’s fundraising arm, The Walker Foundation. “We wanted to build a playground that could be used by students who are deaf, students who are blind, and students who are physically disabled. And, thanks to our generous donors, that goal will soon become a reality.”

The new playground will be the third and final playground to be replaced on the campus of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. The Walker Foundation has worked with community organizations throughout the state to fund a school plan to update and replace all of its playgrounds with new, accessible play areas.
