COLUMBIA, SC – Were you aware of the connection between gum disease and strokes? Dr. Souvik Sen, SmartState Endowed Chair in Clinical Stroke Research, will discuss this astonishing correlation at Science Café, May 10, 2016, 6 p.m. at Speakeasy in Five Points, 711 Saluda Ave.

Dr. Sen is an expert in stroke treatment and research, with a specific interest in acute stroke treatment and cardio-embolic strokes caused by blood clots that develop in the heart and travel to the brain. His research revolves around understanding stroke risk factors and developing new approaches for treatment and prevention.

Before joining the University of South Carolina and SmartState, Dr. Sen was the Founding Director of the nationally recognized University of North Carolina Stroke Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Now, Dr. Sen is leading a study that is a collaboration between the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry. The study aims to get patients who are at risk for stroke ahead of the curve and their goal is to see whether better periodontal care translates into a reduced risk for stroke and other cardiovascular events.

Dr. Sen is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and most recently served on the committee for Thoracic Aortic Disease guidelines sponsored by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology, and the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association have funded his research.

Science Café is presented monthly by SmartState and managed by Sagacious Partners.
