108 children attend Salvation Army summer camp programs

The Salvation Army of the Midlands provided a summer camping experience to 83 local Children at Camp Walter Johnson in Denton, North Carolina . In addition, The Salvation Army also provided a summer Day Camp program for 25 local children (ages 6-12) here in Columbia.
Camp Walter Johnson provides a positive environment for children to grow, learn and be encouraged while striving to meet spiritual, social, recreational and educational needs. Since 1974, Camp Walter Johnson has impacted the lives of over 55,000 children throughout North and South Carolina.
Each summer at camp, one child from Columbia is recognized as the Walter E. Hayden Star Camper for exemplifying kindness and respect during their time at Camp Walter Johnson. Counselors select one camper to present the award to on the last day of camp. This year, Hector Hernandez (age 9) was the recipient of the award.
When asked about his experience at camp, Hector replied enthusiastically. “I loved Camp Walter Johnson and can’t wait to go back. I met friends from all over and got to do so many activities like swimming and archery.” All of the counselors agreed that Hector was kind to his fellow campers, always made everyone feel included and showed respect to all camp staff.
Children also took part in a Day Camp summer experience here in Columbia. Day Camp ran for six weeks throughout the summer months, from June 11 through July 20. Campers were able to enjoy fun and educational activities, field trips and a nutritious breakfast and lunch each day.
Families paid low registration fees for both Camp Walter Johnson and Columbia Day Camp. Generous donations and community support made it possible for The Salvation Army to make the summer camping season affordable for low income/working parents.
