1×1 Design associate Yarely Martinez joins Columbia AIA Board of Directors

The team at 1×1 Design announced that Yarely Martinez has joined the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Columbia Board of Directors. Martinez, Associate AIA, is the fourth 1×1 Design staff member to be elected to the board since 2011.
AIA Columbia, which has approximately 220 design professionals as members, is one of six AIA South Carolina (AIASC) chapters. The group strives to be the voice of the architectural profession by providing networking, continuing education and community outreach programs for its more than 900 statewide members.
“I am so honored to be selected to the AIA Columbia board,” says Martinez. “It’s an incredible organization that connects architects and associates as well as providing wonderful community service programs like Kids in Architecture. This one-day workshop allows our members to work with students to create an art or architecture project. This type of experience could spark interest in a child about a career in architecture.”
Asheley Scott St. John, AIA LEED AP, president and owner of 1×1 Design, is enthusiastic about Martinez’ new position. “Yarely is going to add great value to the board because she has so much passion for this profession,” she says. “The AIA organization continues to grow and develop since I was the Columbia chapter’s board president in 2011. It makes me proud to see the benefit it gives to members and am happy for 1×1 Design to have someone from our team serving in a leadership role for AIA.”
Martinez joined 1×1 in May 2018 after graduating from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a minor in sociology.
Launched in 2011, 1×1 Design is a woman-owned architecture firm with DBE certification; the firm is comprised of five full-time staff, including an architect, an interior designer, two intern architects and one project coordinator.
1×1 Design works with commercial clients across South Carolina and throughout the Southeast on new construction as well as renovations, masterplans, maintenance and upgrades in a variety of industry sectors, including corporate, office and industrial; government; retail, restaurant/hospitality and entertainment; nonprofit; faith/religion, education and healthcare; transportation; and multifamily housing, as well as select single-family residential projects.
