1×1 Design congratulates “Flip and Give” team on AIA SC award
October 18, 2019Architecture firm 1×1 Design was architect of record for The Moore Company’s Flip & Give vision
The team at 1×1 Design congratulates Graeme Moore and Justin Drafts of The Moore Company, who received the 2019 Community Collaboration Award from the South Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIASC) for the Flip & Give project, for which 1×1 Design served as the project’s Architect of Record.
The inaugural Flip & Give project was a yearlong, community-driven renovation project that brought together 23 vendors, including 1×1 Design, with five charities to renovate a house in Columbia, South Carolina’s Shandon neighborhood. Driven by social media voting, the collaborations allowed for increased project efficiency, which included sharing workload and expenses with donated time, labor and materials. The Moore Company’s Graeme Moore and Justin Drafts spearheaded the effort.
1×1 Design was chosen as the Architect of Record because of its successful track record and its experience not only with residential renovations but also with a broad portfolio of commercial projects across the state and beyond.
“This effort embodies the AIASC Community Collaboration award in every sense,” says Asheley Scott St. John, AIA, LEED AP, president and owner of 1×1 Design. “From the schematic design through construction administration to the partnerships with local nonprofits, it was more than a project — it was a passion of The Moore Company, and we are humbled to have been one of the contributors.”
The original 1920s-era bungalow was 1,668 square feet with three bedrooms and one bathroom. The renovation increased the square footage more than 50 percent to 2,866 square feet, which yielded four bedrooms and three bathrooms with a modern kitchen, larger family room, user-friendly laundry room, enhanced master suite and two spacious exterior porches.
The design choices were in the hands of fans on social media, who voted on choices ranging from master bathroom layout to specific finishes such as tile backsplash. The donated net proceeds from the house’s sale totaled $100,000, which was given to five charities, also picked by online voting.
The AIASC Community Collaboration Award is given to programs, institutions or individuals that advance the public understand and appreciation of design or a project exhibiting exceptional engagement of the community in the design process. The community collaboration award recognizes the important role of the public, the community and the neighborhoods play in engaging the communities and keeping with the pioneering spirit of the area.
