2014-2015 Carolos Moseley Chamber Music Season Announced

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Carlos Moseley Chamber Music Series brings world-renowned musicians to the intimate venue of Converse College’s Daniel Recital Hall for a season including four concerts. The season begins Sept. 22 and continues through spring 2015, with the opening concert featuring Egyptian virtuoso Wael Farouk, who earned praise from New York Concert Review as “a formidable and magnificent pianist”. Performances are followed by champagne receptions that offer guests the opportunity to meet and talk with the performers. Season subscriptions are open to the public for $125 per person. A Spartanburg favorite since his days as a graduate student at the Petrie School of Music, Egyptian virtuoso WAEL FAROUK has performed around the world—on five continents—as both concerto soloist and recitalist. He gave the Egyptian premieres of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, and Prokofiev Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2, and 3, and in 2013 he made his New York solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall. Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of the Performing Arts, where Mr. Farouk is a faculty member, was the setting last season for a remarkable five-recital series in which Mr. Farouk performed the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff.  More info at www.waelfarouk.net

International superstar DAVID DANIELS is known for his superlative artistry, magnetic stage presence and a voice of singular warmth and surpassing beauty. A Spartanburg native and son of beloved Converse voice professors Perry and Phyllis Daniels, he has appeared with all the major international opera companies and on the world’s greatest concert and recital stages, and he has helped to redefine his voice category for the modern public. In 2002 Mr. Daniels made history as the first countertenor to sing a recital in the main auditorium of Carnegie Hall. In 1983, a group of devoted faculty, administrators and community supporters formed the Friends of the School of Music. Among them was Carlos Moseley, whose world-wide musical connections helped establish Converse College as a venue for such eminent performers as Charles Wadsworth and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Yo-Yo Ma, Chanticleer, the Tokyo String Quartet, the Beaux Arts Trio and many others. In 2004, the Friends of the Petrie School of Music renamed our concert series the Carlos Moseley Chamber Music Series.

For decades the name Carlos Moseley has been synonymous with musical excellence. This great musician was revered for his contributions to music not only in his hometown of Spartanburg, but also around the world. Carlos enjoyed a distinguished career as a concert pianist, professor, and as president of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Chairman of the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York. He served on the boards of Converse College and Brevard Music Center, and was awarded honorary doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School, Duke University, Wofford College and Converse College. He was also a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor available to a citizen of South Carolina.

Subscriptions to the Moseley series and additional donations to the Friends of the Petrie School of Music provide support for Converse music students and make possible an array of education activities by Moseley Series artists. These activities include master classes and open rehearsals at Converse, as well as programs at local high schools.
