2016 Coker College Summer Piano Institute accepting applications

HARTSVILLE, SC – The Coker College Summer Piano Institute, a summer program for select high school pianists hosted by Coker’s Department of Dance, Music and Theatre, is proud to announce two exciting changes to this year’s program. Thanks to a generous grant from the Black Creek Arts Council, the 2016 program will provide need-based scholarships for deserving students and host two guest artists as instructors. Guest artists Ann Schein and Scott Price will join the faculty alongside the institute’s director Ryan Smith.
A celebrated pianist and teacher for more than 60 years, Ann Schein has performed thousands of concerts on every continent. Since her debut in Mexico City in 1957 when she performed both the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto and the Tchaikovsky B-flat Concerto, her career has earned her high praise in major American and European cities and in more than 50 countries around the world.
Scott Price is Professor of Music at the University of South Carolina where he is Coordinator of Piano Pedagogy. He has performed and lectured across the United States and is also founder and editor-in-chief of the Piano Pedagogy Forum, which was awarded the Frances Clark Keyboard Pedagogy Award. Price was named a Foundation Fellow by the Music Teachers National Association in 2009, and is the 2012 recipient of the Southeastern Conference Faculty Achievement Award for the University of South Carolina.
This year marks the third annual Summer Piano Institute. “Working with top quality faculty and playing duets with other students forced me to grow and perform at the highest level that I could,” said Ladd Platt, a high school senior from Columbia who has attended the last two programs. “It’s a great experience to be in a community of other musicians that have just as much passion for piano as I do.” Ladd will attend this summer for the third and final time before heading off to the University of South Carolina to study music and medicine.
The Summer Piano Institute allows students to explore piano studies intensively with veteran teachers and a community of fellow students. Students must be currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12 and no older than 18, and they must have completed at least four years of keyboard study. This year’s program will be held June 20-24.
Applications will be accepted through June 1. Early tuition ($325) is due by May 15, and late tuition ($350) is due by June 1. For more information or to apply, visit www.coker.edu/about/summer-
