2017 Advocate Exchange a huge success

More than 50 victims’ advocates and domestic violence service providers from across the Midlands observed Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, Oct. 11 by participating in the 2017 Advocate Exchange hosted by Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine.
The Advocate Exchange provides an opportunity for those in the victims services field to network and learn about trends in the industry. Today’s workshop speaker was Otiti Wright, Founder of Manifest the Extreme, who helped advocates focus on taking care of themselves. She emphasized the need for self-care to be able to sustain the demanding work of supporting domestic violence survivors and their families. Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands Community Education Director Kayce Singletary was the Keynote Speaker today. Singletary discussed what she sees as trends in teen dating violence. Singletary has been working in the sexual violence prevention for seven years now and has presented to international audiences on the topic.
Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine explains why this event is important, “We are inundated with stories about violence against women, violence against spouses and children being caught in the middle. I understand the importance of the work of victims’ advocates, domestic violence counselors and their support staff. Their work saves lives and helps victims transcend to survivors.”
