The Second Annual Rescue Brew Beer Spokesdog and Spokescat star search is now underway! Winners will appear on the labels of our “2021 Rescue Brew Beer” from Palmetto Brewing Company. Pet owners are being asked to submit a photo of their rescued dogs and cats at www.CharlestonAnimalSociety.org/RescueBrew and tell us why their pet deserves to win. Nominations are open July 15, 2021 until August 15, 2021. A $10 entry donation with each nomination supports the lifesaving programs of Charleston Animal Society. Vote for your favorites August 16, 2021 to September 17, 2021. One Grand Prize Winning Dog and one Grand Prize Winning Cat will be announced on October 16, 2021. After the announcement, the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer will be available at the Palmetto Brewing Company Charleston Taproom and select retailers this fall.
Resurrected in 1993, Palmetto Brewing Company was the first brewery to open in South Carolina since prohibition. Located in the heart of Charleston, the brewery has a deep connection to the community and Charleston Animal Society. The Grand Prize Winning Spokesdog and Grand Prize Winning Spokescat will each appear on the labels for the special fall release of the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer. Collin Clark, Director of Brand Development for Palmetto Brewing, said, “All of us at the brewery are huge dog and cat fans and it is important for our company to support the lifesaving work of the Charleston Animal Society. We could not think of a better way to celebrate pets and the people who love them than by creating a special release beer featuring rescued pets on the labels!”
“As more than half of the funds needed for the lifesaving work at Charleston Animal Society come from donations. After the pandemic year, we had to create new and unique ways to partner with local businesses and foster public support,” says Charleston Animal Society President and CEO Joe Elmore, CFRE, CAWA. “We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate the unconditional love that pets bring to our lives and partner with Palmetto Brewing Company, Southern Eagle Distributing, WCSC Live 5 News, Charleston City Paper and Cupcake DownSouth to find the second Spokesdog and Spokescat for the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer.” The public will choose the three finalist dogs and three finalist cats through voting and three local celebrity judges will choose one winning dog and one winning cat to appear on the labels of the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer. The six finalist dogs and cats will each receive a $100 gift certificate for pet supplies at the pet supply store at the Charleston Animal Society and a “Mega Pupcake” from Cupcake DownSouth.
“Being involved in the community and supporting local non-profits is important to all of us at Live 5 News,” said WCSC Vice President and General Manager Dan Cates. “Charleston Animal Society is a cherished partner of Live 5 News and we are thrilled to partner with the organization to celebrate people and pets while raising needed funds to help homeless animals.” Live 5 News is involved with the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer contest by asking the community to go online and to nominate their dogs and cats. The station is the exclusive television partner for this project and will use its social media and digital platforms to promote the fun fundraising effort.
As an added benefit for people who nominate their pets for the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer contest between July 16th and August 15th, the pet lovers at Cupcake DownSouth will give one free “pupcake” to each family. “We’ve been voted as having the best cupcakes in South Carolina and have twice appeared on the popular TV show Southern Charm,” says Cupcake DownSouth President Michael Pitstick. “We know people love our cupcakes! We also know that dogs love a special treat from our bakery so we created a yummy ‘pupcake’ with pet-friendly ingredients. We are so happy to show our love for rescued pets by supporting the 2021 Rescue Brew Beer contest with the Charleston Animal Society.” Any family who enters a pet in the Spokesdog or Spokescat contest can present their entry certificate at either bakery location, Cupcake DownSouth, 644 D Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 or Cupcake DownSouth, 1213 Lincoln Street, Columbia, SC 29201 to receive their free pupcake.
About Charleston Animal Society
Since 1874, the mission of Charleston Animal Society has always been the prevention of cruelty to animals. Almost 20,000 animals will turn to Charleston Animal Society for caring, compassion and hope this year alone. More than an animal shelter, today Charleston Animal Society is a thought leader in the welfare and well-being of animals. In addition to caring for homeless pets, from hamsters to horses, adopting pets into new homes, and reuniting lost pets with their families, the organization responds to animals in crisis as a result of both man-made and natural disasters. Charleston Animal Society is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, an achievement attained by only about 12% of animal hospitals in the United States and Canada. The comprehensive shelter medicine program not only provides direct care for as many as 800 resident animals at one time, the shelter veterinarians also spay or neuter 10,000 pets each year to prevent pet overpopulation and they provide emergency medical services to critically ill and injured animals arriving at the shelter.
