701 CCA Presents: Columbia Open Studios, April 7-8, Free Weekend-Long Tour of 70 Local Artists’ Workspaces
April 2, 2018Discover the Midlands’ vibrant art scene for free during the eighth annual Columbia Open Studios tour, presented by 701 Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA), Saturday, April 7 [10 a.m. – 6 p.m.] and Sunday, April 8 [12 – 6p.m.]. The self-led, daytime driving tour features 70 local artists spanning the City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington counties. A preview party will be held Thursday, April 5, 7-9p.m. in 701 Whaley’s Olympia room to kick off the weekend event.
Plan your weekend-long art crawl
Columbia Open Studios gives locals and tourists alike the opportunity to meet 70 artists from the Midlands and to learn about the materials and techniques that go into creating their pieces. A variety of art will be represented, from ceramics and sculptures to photography, printmaking, painting and more. Tour through homes, gardens and studios to learn about the materials, techniques and inspiration behind the artists’ pieces.
Guests can chat with the artists about their work and watch as some demonstrate their creative process live. Artworks are available for purchase, and as part of 701 CCA’s mission to support the Midlands’ art community, artists keep 100 percent of sales made during Columbia Open Studios.
Studio-hopping across the greater Columbia area offers a unique opportunity to experience the region’s art culture. Make a day trip out of Open Studios by visiting local hotspots and restaurants along the way for sips and snacks. Columbia Open Studios Preview Party: mingle with the makers
The official Columbia Open Studios Preview Party, hosted by 701 CCA, is on Thursday, April 5, 7-9 p.m., in the historic 701 Whaley building. Meet this year’s Open Studios artists and mingle over complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
View a select piece of each artists’ work, exhibited for the duration of the preview party. 701 CCA’s current exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Fletcher Williams III will also be open for viewing.
