United Way of the Midlands announces $11 million campaign goal

September 15, 2017

United Way of the Midlands today announced an $11 million goal for its 2017-2018 campaign during United Way Day, the organization’s kickoff event at the State House.

Hundreds of community members attended as United Way announced that the organization has already raised $4.6 million toward the goal through Pacesetter companies that have already completed workplace giving campaigns.

United Way Day also brought Community Impact partners on-site to provide guests with volunteer opportunities to become a champion for a child, to fight for those experiencing homelessness and to serve critical health needs in the area.

Remarks were provided by Mayor of Columbia Steve Benjamin as well as 2017 Campaign Co-chairs John Singerling, President of Palmetto Health, and Joan Gabel, University of South Carolina Provost.

“United Way Day is a celebration of community and the impact that we can make when we Live United. We are excited to announce our 2017-2018 campaign goal and recognize the incredible work that our partners have already done to invest in improving lives within our community,” said United Way President and CEO Sara Fawcett.

Last year, United Way raised $11 million for community programs focused on education, financial stability and health.

With more than 40,000 community donors, funds raised last year by United Way served more than 27,000 people including: dental and vision care for almost 6,000 adults and children; shelter for 1,524 homeless individuals; and quality in- and out-of-school programs for 2,645 elementary school students.
