#GiveTechChangeLives launches September 14 to bring technology to visually disabled in the Midlands
September 9, 2015Local Nonprofit Launches Technology Campaign for Visually Impaired
COLUMBIA, SC – The Vision Institute of South Carolina, Inc. (TVI), a non-profit advocacy and educational organization serving the blind and visually impaired, launches its first #GiveTechChangeLives campaign on September 14, 2015 thanks to the generosity of Dr. Lisabeth Medlock. After becoming visually impaired, Dr. Medlock realized there was a void in locating, accessing and being t1rained on available technology for the visually impaired, and of the significant costs involved. TVI was established to help people like Lisabeth through the array of technology and tools available, to bridge the gap between their disability and the sighted world. After learning about TVI, Lisabeth wanted to give back offering her guidance and financial resources to help TVI launch the #GiveTechChangeLives campaign.
The need for technology, tools and training is great. However, such technological lifelines are not affordable to most. #GiveTechChangeLives aims to connect blind and visually impaired individuals with life changing technology and devices, allowing them to work, further their education and live more independently. Technology like screen reader software, HD magnification cameras and braille keyboards provide access to apps, news, games and other media. Tools like bar code readers and other magnification and talking devices allow the blind and visually impaired to enjoy television, travel, and shopping. Tech wish-lists, specialized devices, monetary contributions for training and gently used hardware are desired. #GiveTechChangeLives launches September 14, 2015 at www.tvisc.org and through TVI’s social media.
