Locally Epic pushes for more people to shop at small businesses throughout 2018

March 13, 2018

What if the concept of Small Business Saturday that puts an emphasis on shopping local each December became a monthly event right here in Greenville?

That is the goal of Locally Epic as it launches the Upstate Shop Local Saturday campaign, which is an effort to drive consumers to locally owned and operated businesses every fourth Saturday of the month, for March that is the 24th. To help raise awareness of the campaign, the Locally Epic app will help people find promotions and offers the entire week leading up to Shop Local Saturday each fourth Saturday.

“We want people to just go and buy local,” said Chase Michaels, the CEO and founder of Locally Epic. “The impact on our local economy can be huge if people do this.”

Michaels points to the data that drives the idea of buying locally.

For every dollar someone spends in a Locally Owned Business, 75 cents stays right here in Upstate. Only 35 cents of every dollar spent at a big box retailer stays local and one penny of every dollar that is spent online.

“Shopping at locally owned stores is essential to keeping the Upstate economy growing. Buy a painting from a local artist. Eat at locally owned restaurants,” Michaels said. “We are not asking people to spend more money. Just take what you are spending now online or a big box store and go to a locally owned shop. If Upstate consumers pivot $20 a week away from online or a big box store to a locally owned store for 52 weeks (1 year) that would increase the local Upstate economy by $300 million.” Now that’s Locally Epic!

Locally Epic engages local consumers via a mobile platform that allows them to enhance their ability to find local offers and promotions from a wide range of businesses in real time, while allowing businesses to effectively reach new audiences. Locally Epic has more than 35,000 users and 45 categories for them to find the best offers around. The app can be downloaded here or found on Itunes or GooglePlay.

“One of the Upstate’s charms is its home-grown businesses,” Michaels said. “They are a backbone of the community and by supporting them, we support ourselves. Let’s all come together and be stewards of this awesome place we call home. Let’s Keep it Local! ”
