The Community Foundation of Greenville awards Legacy Early College Elementary School $45,000
February 22, 2018

Scholars and members of the Legacy Early College leadership staff met with representatives of the Community Foundation to receive a $45,000 educational grant.
Legacy Early College Elementary School received a $45,000 grant from the Community Foundation’s Margaret Linder Southern Endowment Fund. This grant award will be used to address three critical areas of need within the school: scholar technology resources, reading and comprehension fluency programming for Legacy’s ESOL scholars, and professional development for Legacy’s math educators.
The West Greenville neighborhoods that Legacy predominantly serves represent some of Greenville’s most underserved census tracts. Legacy’s internal data revealed that 65 percent of scholars entering K5 were already behind in basic reading skills. If Legacy’s educational model does not accelerate the scholars’ learning through an extended day academic model, many would never catch up academically. To meet these academic challenges, the Legacy’s Elementary Leadership Team analyzed scholar assessment data to determine the most critical areas of school academic need.
“This award from the Community Foundation will give us a powerful three-pronged approach to meet scholars at their specific area of academic need and accelerate them to grade level and beyond,” stated Legacy Early College Elementary Principal, Virginia Burrows. “It is this kind of essential community and academic support that will allow us to prepare 570 elementary scholars for academic success “to and through college graduation.”
Legacy Early College serves 1330 K5 through 12th grade scholars in West Greenville with a three-tiered educational model built upon Academic Excellence, Physical Education, and Superior Nutrition. Supported by this model, Legacy’s educational vision is to see each scholar “to and through college graduation.” One hundred percent of Legacy’s high school graduates have been accepted to college.
