Furman Education Professor Katie Stover co-authors book

February 18, 2016

Assistant Professor of Education Katie Stover has co-authored a book about writing targeted for teachers of grades 3-12.

The book, Smuggling Writing: Strategies That Get Students to Write Every Day, in Every Content Area, Grades 3-12, is published by Corwin. It is co-authored with Karen Wood and Bruce Taylor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The volume provides classroom teachers with process-oriented literacy and learning strategies designed to engage students and ultimately help them make sense of both what they are learning and what they need to learn. It shows teachers how to integrate writing seamlessly into their lesson plans with 32 written response activities that help students process information and ideas in short, powerful sessions.

Smuggling Writing provides sample lessons using digital applications to help teachers and students use technology in meaningful ways.

“We wanted to share ideas for teaching that foster greater engagement and deepen student learning,” said Stover. “We hope teachers will be able to put these tools to immediate use to connect with and support the diverse students that they teach every day.”

A former elementary teacher and literacy coach, Stover says her research interests include teacher preparation and development, digital literacies and critical literacy. She has had numerous book chapters and articles published in peer-reviewed journals including The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and Literacy Research and Instruction.

Stover currently serves on the board of directors for Greenville County’s Chapter of the International Reading Association (GCIRA), is the co-editor for NCTE’s Early Childhood Education Assembly’s journal, Provocations and Perspectives, and is a reviewer for NCTE’s journal, Voices From the Middle, the Georgia Journal of Reading, and The Journal of Teacher Action Research.

Stover joined the Department of Education 2012, and also serves as coordinator of Furman’s master’s degree program in literacy. Stover holds a doctorate and master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a bachelor’s from State University of New York at Cortland.
