Child abuse prevention grants awarded across South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC – December 3, 2012 – Five organizations in SouthCarolina are receiving grant funding under the Community-Based ChildAbuse Prevention program. Children’s Trust administers the federalCommunity-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) grants in South Carolina.These grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Health and HumanServices, Administration for Children and Families.
 
Theseprograms are innovative, child-centered and family-focused. They work tostrengthen families using proven protective factors. The programs arecentered in communities where families who need help can access themeasily. Currently community based child abuse prevention grants supportprevention programs that specifically focus on home visiting and/orparenting education and support.
 
Ellen Hines Smith Girls’ Home:  Family Strengthening Program
Counties served:  Cherokee and Spartanburg
Grant: $57,529
TheFamily Strengthening program provides an intensive, in-homeintervention for families at greater risk of child abuse or neglect.This program will utilize Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) as wellas service expansion from Spartanburg to include Cherokee County zipcode 29340. Hope Haven of the Lowcountry:  Parent Child Interactive Therapy Expansion
Countyserved: Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper
Grant: $54,931
Hope Haven of theLowcountry will expand its effective Parent-Child Interaction Therapy(PCIT) Program to prevent child abuse in low- and moderate-riskfamilies. Hope Haven’s PCIT program will focus on prevention and striveto improve the quality of the parent-child relationship, decrease childbehavior problems with an increase in pro-social behaviors, increaseparenting skills, including positive discipline and decreased parentingstress.

Julie Valentine Center:  Parents are Essential Program
Countiesserved: Greenville and Pickens  Grant: $43,435
Julie Valentine Centerwill continue offering the 24/7 Dad Curriculum through the UpstateFatherhood Coalition and 13th Judicial Circuit Drug Court whileexpanding services offered through the Drug Court to provide theNurturing Parenting Program to mothers who are defendants indrug-related offenses. This program will connect non-custodial fathersand drug defendant mothers with their children in a positive manner,thus improving the child’s self-esteem and opportunity to succeedacademically and socially. South Carolina Research Foundation:  PASOs for Parents

Countiesserved: Richland and Lexington  Grant: $55,785
PASOs (Steps inSpanish) is a community-based organization hosted by the University ofSouth Carolina Arnold School of Public Health.  This program will servefamilies with children 0-12 years of age to prevent first incidences ofchild abuse and neglect among under-served Latino families using theGroup Triple P (Positive Parenting Program).  Agency contact:  JulieSmithwick, Executive Director, (803) 777-5466, [email protected]
 
Windwood Farm Home for Children:  Strengthening Families Program


Countiesserved:  Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester
Grant: $60,552
TheStrengthening Families Program (SFP) will target low-income, singleparent and teen parents to significantly reduce problem behaviors,delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse to improve social competenciesand school performance. The Parent Session is designed to enhanceparenting skills and promote effective parenting styles, while theChild/Youth Session focuses on building youth life skills. Theseapplicants were selected through a competitive grant process. Communityleaders from across the state participated reviewed and made awardrecommendations to the Board of Directors of Children’s Trust. Fundingwas effective October 2012. Grants are for a three-year cycle throughSeptember 2015 pending program performance.


Nonprofit,faith-based, and public serving organizations were invited to apply.Consideration was given to those organizations whose mission andprograms align with Children’s Trust’s effort to prevent child abuse,neglect and unintentional injuries by promoting healthy, nurturingrelationships between children and adults. 
According to SueWilliams, Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Trust, All theseprograms impact primary and secondary prevention efforts. The goal is topositively influence parents, guardians, caregivers, and childrenbefore abuse or neglect occurs. These funds will also be targeted towardpopulations who are considered to be at risk because of their lifesituations.
 
Sue Williams adds, These programs are important toour children and to our state. They serve as innovative evidence-based,best practice models. We use the work here to inform other preventionpartners throughout the state on what is working at the ground level tohelp keep our children safe.
