Greenville Tech students win at SkillsUSA

GREENVILE, SC – April 12, 2012 – Greenville Technical College students brought home awards in many different categories from the South Carolina Skills USA competition held March 30-31 in Greenville. Winners will now be eligible to compete at the national level in Kansas City, June 23-27.

Winners included the following:

  • CNC Turning          Dean Schaffer-Johnson        First Place
  • CNC Milling            Colin Crader                First Place
  • Precision Machining        Josh Goshorn                First Place
  • HVAC/R            Justin Ballenger            First Place
  • Collision Repair        Jared Milford                First Place
  • Automotive Refinish        Woody Riser                First Place
  • Welding Sculpture        Chris Boling                First Place
  • Welding Team Fabrication     Erik Dahl, Kyle DeKoning, Kris Trott      First Place

In addition to student participation, Greenville Tech provided in-kind support valued at more than $50,000 for the competition. 

This contribution included use of Greenville Tech facilities for the automotive, auto collision, HVAC and welding competitions. The college also provided equipment and tools for set-up and takedown.

Tuition assistance of $2.000 each was contributed to secondary winners in selected categories.  These categories included Architectural Drafting, Automotive Refinishing, Automotive Service Technology, Carpentry, CNC Milling Technology, CNC Turning Technology, Collision Repair Technology, Cosmetology, Diesel Equipment Technology, Electronics Technology, Engineering Technology, Fire Fighting, HVAC/R, Masonry, Mechatronics, Mobile Electronics, Mobile Robotics, Nail Care, Plumbing, Precision Machining Technology, Residential/Construction Wiring, Robotics and Automation Technology, Team Works, Technical Drafting, Welding, Welding Fabrication, and Welding Sculpture Design Demonstration. In addition, the Technology Division Dean, Joel Welch, serves on the South Carolina Skills USA board while many instructors serve as tech chairs, attending meetings throughout the year.
