Clemson announces 2011 Chapman Scholars
May 18, 2011CLEMSON, SC – May 17, 2011 – Ten sophomores in Clemson University’s College of Business and Behavioral Science (CBBS) have been selected as Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars.
The Chapman Leadership Scholars Program, a three-year experience beginning in a student’s sophomore year, will enhance the leadership potential and skills of select students in the college. It is an integral part of the college’s mission to develop leaders in business and behavioral science. The program includes opportunities to enrich the student’s university experience beyond the classroom and curriculum.
Half of a $2 million gift from Atlanta resident Thomas F. “Tom” Chapman, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Equifax Inc. and a 1965 graduate of Clemson, established the Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars Program in 2008.
“I know the benefits of the Clemson experience, and I want to enhance that experience for future students, Chapman said. I learned valuable lessons at Clemson and was fortunate to have been blessed from the commitment of mentors who took an interest in my potential.
The 2011 scholars are:
• Kelly Morin, Franklin, Tenn.
• Connie Henderson, West Columbia
• Ashton Schumpert, Chapin
• Annabeth Garrett, The Woodlands, Texas
• Nick Ratti, Haddonfield, N.J.
• Kyle Stinchcomb, Providence, N.J.
• Julie Zeitz, Austin, Texas
• Zach Hrovat, Lexington
• Paul Botello, Centerville, Mass.
• Anthony Valentini, New Fairfield, Conn.
The review, interview and ultimate selection of these 10 students was a difficult process for the committee because we had many fine applicants, said James Gaubert, senior lecturer in marketing and director of undergraduate leadership programs in the college. We feel these 10 students best reflect the goal Mr. Chapman hopes to achieve through his support and nurturing of tomorrow’s leaders.”
A student’s selection is based primarily on his or her aptitude and willingness to make the extra effort to become an effective leader through research and service. Ten Chapman Leadership Scholars are named annually, and each receive a total scholarship of $6,000 over the three years they participate in the program.
“College graduates who have identified their own leadership potential will have an edge in the global marketplace,” said Claude C. Lilly, dean of the College of Business and Behavioral Science. “What Mr. Chapman has provided these students is not just a line item on their resume, but a real, hands-on, rigorous, three-year development experience that will nurture their leadership potential and, ultimately, make them stand out to future employers.”
Clemson’s College of Business and Behavioral Science develops students from a variety of backgrounds and majors into bold leaders who will positively impact society. The Chapman Leadership Scholars Program helps the college fulfill its mission by providing a structured program, ongoing support and a high level of accountability for students to develop their leadership potential.
