Entrepreneur Secrets: Do you run a boring business?
March 13, 2017By Jerry Bellune
Are NASCAR races too long and boring?
How about Major League Baseball games?
Do kids even trade baseball cards any more?
What’s a baseball card? you ask.
Forget it. You’re too young to know.
Both sports are becoming cures for insomnia.
Neither promote drivers or players as role models.
That’s a major mistake. It’s a celebrity business.
Their stars should promote non-profit causes.
They should be active in the lives of their fans.
In NASCAR’s early days, we admired drivers.
Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson, Richard Petty.
These guys put their lives on the line at each race.
In baseball, we loved Willie Mays and Stan Musial.
They reflected what was best about America.
And the Oscar awards are in trouble, too.
They have become a boring “thank you” party.
The film celebrities aren’t role models either.
Some of their political positions turn off fans.
How does this apply to your business?
Think about it. Do you bore clients and prospects?
Is your customer base slowly fading away?
We came to Lexington in 1984 and got involved.
We went to every community meeting.
We joined every group that would have us.
We walked the streets meeting people.
(No. Not that kind of street walking.)
It helped us turn around an almost bankrupt company.
All of us need to do what NASCAR needs to do.
Get involved in our communities.
Get our people deeply involved, too.
Volunteer at church and in the schools.
Serve as role models for younger people.
Attend networking events to find and help others.
That way we make friends for ourselves.
We build confidence in us and our businesses.
