Advertisement of vacancies on various boards and commissions

The City of Columbia is accepting applications to fill several vacancies on the following boards and commissions.

 

Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC)

Seeking several Applicants for Re-Appointment/Appointment. 

The purpose of BPAC is to advise the Mayor and City Council Members, the City of Columbia transportation planning staff; community organizations; and partners on bicycling and pedestrian issues facing the city; to work toward development of bicycle/pedestrian master plan; to represent community and constituent interests in transportation planning decisions; and to provide feedback to staff on projects relating to walking and bicycling.Current appointees need to re-apply for consideration. Term – 2 years.

 

Board of Zoning Appeals

Seeking two (2) Applicants.

Hear and decide appeals when someone claims that the Zoning Administrator had made an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination in enforcing the zoning ordinance; The Board of Zoning Appeals may grant special exceptions for uses that the City Council believes are generally permissible but require review and approval on a case-by-case basis to ensure secondary impacts do not adversely impact traffic; vehicle and pedestrian safety; adjoining property in terms of noise, lights, fumes, and air flow; the aesthetic character of the environs; and the orientation and spacing of buildings ; and  may grant a variance to certain provisions of the Zoning Ordinance where a literal enforcement of the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance would result in unnecessary hardship, provided that the spirit of the Zoning Ordinance shall be observed, public safety and welfare secured, and substantial justice done. Term – 3 years.

 

Central Midlands Regional Transportation Authority (COMET)

Seeking one (1) Applicant.

The purpose of this board is to promote transportation opportunities for all citizens within the service area which consists of Richland County and limited service into Lexington County. This is done by providing transportation services and encouraging the cooperation and coordination of existing transportation providers. Term – 3 years.

 

Design/Development Review Commission

Seeking four (4) Applicants for Appointment/Re-Appointment. Applicants being sought must meet the following criteria: a planner, an attorney admitted to practice before the South Carolina Supreme Court; an architectural historian; and an architect.

The purpose of the Design/Development Review Commission (DDRC) is to review and approve work proposed within the City’s historic districts, urban design areas, and upon designated landmarks. Term – 3 years.

 

Greater Columbia Community Relations Council

Seeking three (3) Applicants for Re-Appointment/Appointment. Applicant must reside within the city limits.

The purpose of this Council is to study and evaluate information concerning community relations issues within the community and to formulate and submit opinions and recommendations as to possible courses of action that appear in the best interest of the community as a whole. Term – 3 years.

 

Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism

Seeking one (1) Applicant for Appointment. Applicant must be working in the Lodging Industry. Applicants must work/reside within Columbia city limits.

The mission of the Midlands Authority for Conventions Sports and Tourism includes: directing and managing the activities and mission of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Columbia Regional Sports Council and the Columbia Regional Visitors Center; and overseeing the development and operation of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center under a long-term management agreement for the benefit of the Governmental Entities: City of Columbia, Lexington County and Richland County. Term – 3 years.

 

River Alliance

Seeking one (1) Applicant for Re-Appointment/Appointment. Applicant must reside within city limits.

The purpose of The River Alliance (the “Alliance” or “Corporation”) shall be to maximize the benefits derived from the assets of the Broad, Congaree, and Saluda Rivers for the citizens of the Central Midlands Metropolitan Area of South Carolina, and to do all things necessary or convenient, and not inconsistent with law, to further these goals. Term – 3 years.
