South Carolina insurance consumers one step closer to going paperless

May 12, 2016

The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) commends the South Carolina Senate Banking and Insurance Committee for passing HB 3969, which will allow insurance policyholders to conduct policyholder transactions over the internet if they choose to do.

“We live in time where everything we do is linked to our smartphones, and this piece of legislation allows insurers to keep up with their policyholder demands,” said Oyango Snell, state government relations counsel for PCI.

This bill would allow South Carolina policyholders to review or renew their insurance policies, receive their insurance bills, or other notices through the internet as opposed to regular mail delivery if they choose to do so. “There is a growing trend across the country to enable insurers to conduct all policyholder transactions over the internet with the consumer’s consent. It’s important for policyholders to know that this will be up to them to decide, they can simply choose to go paperless or not,” said Snell.

PCI and our members support expanding consumer choice and allow consumers the convenience of accessing policy information digitally in all states, all while mitigating the environmental impact of sending out thousands of sheets of paper. “Saving on costs for consumers is a major plus,” added Snell.

Oyango Snell is available for media interviews. The bill will now head to the floor.

PCI is composed of nearly 1,000 member companies, representing the broadest cross section of insurers of any national trade association. PCI members write more than $183 billion in annual premium, 35 percent of the nation’s property casualty insurance. Member companies write 42 percent of the U.S. automobile insurance market, 27 percent of the homeowners market, 32 percent of the commercial property and liability market and 34 percent of the private workers compensation market.
