Statement pieces are over. The big necklaces, bracelets and cocktail rings have had their moment for several seasons, but now we are seeing the pendulum swing away from them to more subtle, refined and layered pieces.

One unexpected offshoot of this trend is the rise in personal jewelry. This is literally any piece of jewelry that has special meaning for you. Whether it’s a classic monogram or heirloom piece whose meaning is only known by you. This trend is unique because we are seeing these pieces worn everyday and incorporated into a signature style that is almost undetectable in its subtlety.

Most personal jewelry is simple, which works perfectly with this new understated trend in jewelry, and typically gold or silver. Here are some of the most popular pieces now available for personalization:

1.    Initials. Whether you choose a single initial or full monogram. Initials are one of the most classic forms of personal jewelry and will always withstand the test of time. Now that they are once again popular the range of options are endless for any piece you choose whether it’s a pendant, bracelet, stud earrings or signet ring.

2.    Roman Numerals. Another classic way to create a personalized piece, roman numerals are a bit more mysterious in their meaning. They could represent a significant day such as a birthday, anniversary, graduation or more playful choices like the year your team won a championship or a ‘secret code’ for you and your friends.

3.    Coded Rings. Stacked and midi rings are very popular right now, and range from simple geometric shapes to numbers, letters and astrological sings. So how you choose to arrange them, or even the pieces you choose to wear will inherently mean something to you. Is it a birthday, lucky number, life path or something else?

4.    State Necklaces. These have been growing in popularity for a while now, especially with transplants or people who travel extensively. It’s a simple way to keep a small piece of home with you no matter where you are, and show a little pride in it as well. These are also great pieces to layer with other personal necklaces or simple chains.

Charm bracelets use to be a symbol of personal style and story, but they can be a bit cumbersome. Keep the story, but lose the bulk with these newer, more understated ways of wearing personal and personalized jewelry. Who says signature style has to be in-your-face?
