Have a great night out with your favorite pop classics: National touring vocal group, The Doo Wop Project, hits Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College on October 4

COLUMBIA, SC – OCTOBER 4, 2013 – Celebrated for their harmonious renditions of contemporary pop songs and classics of yesteryear, the Tony Award-winning cast of The Doo Wop Project will kick off Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College’s second season on Oct. 4, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. (Please note that over half of the available seats for this show have been sold and the concert is expected to sell out.)

The Doo Wop Project features cast members of the Broadway smash Jersey Boys, the documentary-style musical that won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, after its 2005 debut. 

While the original Jersey Boys features the songs of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The Doo Wop Project is a cabaret revue anchored by multi-part doo-wop arrangements of hits from the likes of Randy and the Rainbows, The Skyliners, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and more.

Fans of the movie Pitch Perfect and NBC’s a capella vocal competition show The Sing Off will enjoy revisiting the days of vocal-group glory, back when jukeboxes were in every diner and when weekend dances were more popular than TV shows.

I like for our audiences to see themselves onstage sometimes, and the style of this performance will remind those who grew up in the 50s and 60s of the sounds of their favorite summer trips or their first dates, says Katie Fox, Director of Theatre Operations.

The production is a mix of songs and storytelling, as the vocalists weave stories of their upbringings and lives in the music business. They will share tales of working backstage at The August Wilson Theatre, home of Jersey Boys. Audiences will get a sense of their personal journeys to success. Be prepared to laugh and be wowed.  

I love this show because it’s not cliché, says Fox. Though some might claim that doo-wop never went out of style, I love that this show applies the doo-wop treatment to contemporary music.  If you think Michael Jackson or Amy Winehouse performed at the top of their game, wait until you hear those songs in five-part harmony!

Using soul-stirring pop music as the engine, The Doo Wop Project will delight theatergoers of all ages, from baby boomers to children, with goosebump-inducing harmonies and finger-snapping choreography. Feel free to sing along!
