Fed Reserve Bank Senior VP to Deliver Keynote at Claflin University Business Community Alliance Luncheon

ORANGEBURG, SC – March 7, 2008 – Claflin University’s eleventh annual Business Community Alliance Luncheon, which provides an opportunity for students to showcase their innovative programs to leaders in the South Carolina business community, will take place on Wednesday, March 19, on the University’s campus.
This annual event, which increasingly draws leaders from the corporate and government community, will feature a keynote address by a national leader in the nation’s financial industry.
Mr. Jeffrey S. Kane, senior vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va., will discuss the “State of the Southeastern United States Economy.” The luncheon, sponsored by the School of Business and the University’s Business Advisory Board, will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Ministers’ Hall.
“The corporate leaders and industry insiders who will visit our campus will have a valuable opportunity to interact with our students, and learn more about our quality academic offerings, including accounting, management, marketing, finance, organizational management and our MBA program,” said Dr. Harpal Grewal, dean of the School of Business.
The Claflin University School of Business received accreditation from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACPSP) in 1997. Enrollment has doubled to more 400 full-time, graduate, professional and continuing education students since then.
And, in recent years, Claflin’s School of Business graduates have routinely landed on Wall Street at leading firms, including UBS Investment Bank, Credit-Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch & Company Inc., Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Bank of America Securities, and at Fortune 500 employers such as SCANA and at UPS corporate headquarters.
Within the past year, the School of Business has taken international initiatives for both faculty and students, including a faculty and student exchange program with Amty University, Delhi, India; a study abroad program at Shanghai University with 16 credit hours and organized tours to provinces in China; and a new MBA program at the London Institute of Technology in London, England, intending to attract students from Europe, Africa and Asia.

Business Community Alliance Luncheon Speaker Profile: Jeffrey S. Kane
As senior vice president in charge of the Charlotte Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Mr. Jeffrey S. Kane is responsible for all activities of the Fifth District branch. He began his banking career in 1975 as a lending officer for the Bank of Virginia in Tidewater, Va. In 1977, he began as an examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and was promoted in 1999 to senior vice president of the Banking Supervision and Regulation Department. Currently, he has overall responsibility for the Fifth District Cash Operations with staff in Charlotte, as well as Richmond and Baltimore. He also oversees the Reserve Accounts/Loan Division which interacts directly with Fifth District institutions, including some of the largest banks in the nation.
Mr. Kane is a member of the Board of Trustees of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and serves on the Belk College Advisory Council at UNC Charlotte. He also serves as a director on the boards of Junior Achievement and the S.C. Council on Economic Education. His civic participation includes service as board chairman of Community Link; treasurer and chairman of the finance committee of United Way of Central Carolinas; member of the executive governing board and audit committee chairman of the Charlotte Regional Partnership; and member of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He served as honorary chairman of the 2006 Art After Dark benefiting the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, and is vice chairman for the 2008 Greater Charlotte Heart Ball.
Mr. Kane has worked to increase the visibility of the Charlotte Branch and has done extensive speaking on the role of the Federal Reserve Bank, various leadership topics, and promoting financial and economic education. He has been a guest speaker for the business and finance programs at various universities across both Carolinas and Virginia, and has been a frequent guest on “Carolina Business Review” on public television. He was profiled in the Spring 2006 issues of North Carolina Career Network magazine on the topic of career development and the state’s economy. He was also profiled in the September 2007 issue of Greater Charlotte Biz magazine addressing the various responsibilities of the Federal Reserve Bank and its role with banks in Charlotte.
Mr. Kane earned a B.A. degree in mathematics at the University of Virginia. He is a graduate of The Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware as well as The Virginia Bankers School of Management at the University of Virginia.
