Fire and Police Chief candidates to visit Charleston

January 22, 2018

The city is in the process of selecting the final candidates for both fire and police chief. Once selected, the candidates for each position will visit Charleston to meet with city representatives and community leaders as part of the final interview process.

Breakfast meetings for the fire and police chief candidates will take place on January 30 and February 6, respectively, and will provide an opportunity for the candidates and members of City Council to become acquainted. Following each of these meetings, the candidates will have an opportunity to meet with fire and police department personnel. During those meetings, they will engage in Q&A sessions that reflect issues important to each department.

Interview panels will convene the following day, comprising the Public Safety Committee, city staff, and community leaders.

To ensure a thorough search for candidates, the city retained two consulting firms, Emergency Services Consulting International (ESCI) and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), to conduct national searches for both fire and police chief. The consultants reviewed numerous applications and assisted in the screenings of candidates for each position. The extensive review process is expected to yield the final candidates for each position. The names of the candidates will be announced prior to their visit.
