Four-Leaf Clovers May Not Boost Your Luck, But These Tips Will

Since it’s a day of celebrating all things Irish, I thought it would be fun to explore the notion of luck and St. Patrick’s Day is full of symbols of luck, including four-leaf clovers, pots of gold at the end of rainbows, and leprechauns.

Whether you believe luck is a product of the universe or something we make ourselves, there’s no denying it exists.  Therefore, here are a few of my favorite ways to give our luck a boost:

1.    Be observant.  We reject opportunities every day.  Sometimes it’s a conscious choice, but most often it’s because we weren’t paying attention.  Whether that’s because we’re preoccupied with our phones, schedules or general sense of rushing from place to place, if we want to have more luck we need to pay attention to what’s being offered to us.

2.    Take action.  Luck isn’t something that happens in a vacuum.  It takes action on our part.  Once we’ve identified an opportunity, we have to seize it.  Sitting at home or behind your desk is not going to generate many opportunities for luck.  To boost our luck we have to get out and connect with other people.

3.    Visualization and positivity help.  If we focus on failing we only increase our likelihood of failure, and sabotage any chance of luck we might have had.  Instead it’s important to focus on the positive and visualize ourselves succeeding.  While unfortunate things happen, you can either choose to dwell on the downside or we can choose to look at the positive one.  After all it could always be worse, right?

4.    Don’t second-guess yourself.  Decisions are a part of life that once made can’t be undone.  So it’s pointless to agonize over every one that we could have made differently.  Instead brush it off and keep moving forward.  We all make good decisions and bad decisions in our lives, and the trick is to not repeat the bad ones.  Just don’t forget that you wouldn’t know they were bad unless you made them in the first place.

5.    Live in the now.  This is my mantra, because it’s something that I struggle with every day.  Being busy is one thing, but this is completely different.  My mind is always racing and tends to be more focused on the future than the present, but that causes me to miss a lot of what’s going on around me.  The only way to stop this is by focusing on this one moment and actually being present.  It’s really the key to everything.

When it comes to luck, we all have the same propensity for it, so this St. Patrick’s Day I hope everyone benefits from a little more luck in their lives; supernatural or man-made.
