The Power of Crazy, Colorful Socks
February 22, 2017By Brian Maynor
Who would have thought something as unassuming as socks could hold power over your success?
In a recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, Silvia Bellezza, Francesca Gino and Anat Keinan looked at the impact wearing colorful socks over perfunctory ones had on perception, and the result was expected.
In addition to perception, Dr. Adam Galinsky, a social psychologist at Northwestern University, documented the connection between what we wear and how we think, feel and act.
So what does all this mean? Here’s a breakdown of how a simple pair of socks can dramatically impact your success:
1. The premise. We all have a deeply ingrained sense of conformity, and fear being singled out, ostracized or ridiculed for being different. In fact, most people strive to live their lives in perfect conformity because it’s safe.
2. The facts. People who do not conform to societal norms can be dismissed as weird, strange, or crazy in most regards, however socks are different. Socks may be the only item of clothing that goes almost entirely unnoticed, unless there is a reason to notice them. These unassuming, somewhat personal items have the potential to showcase individuality, creativity and rebelliousness.
3. The research. The Harvard research found that in addition to dismissal, nonconforming behaviors have a potential benefit over conformity. When done in a deliberate way, the study shows that nonconformity can be viewed as a sense of higher competency and status.
Dr. Galinsky’s research shows that silly, colorful socks are also connected to how we see ourselves. They are a reflection of our uniqueness and confidence, which boosts our self-confidence. We feel good when we own and express our individuality.
4. The conclusion. If you’re ready to embrace your creativity and the sense of bravery that comes from subtly giving the finger to the status quo ditch the black, blue and grey socks for colorful, crazy and fun ones. Just be prepared for the results, both positive and negative.
I understand that not everyone can break out colorful socks, even if they have the desire to, because of one reason or the other, but the theory can still be put to use. Simply wear bright, colorful underwear. The only difference is that your underwear will, or should, only be visible to you.
