Google Turns On free Wi-Fi in Downtown Summerville
October 2, 2013SUMMERVILLE, SC – October 2, 2013 – Residents, visitors and businesses can now take advantage of free Wi-Fi at another Lowcountry gathering place.
On October 1st, Google and the Town of Summerville announced free Wi-Fi access at Hutchinson Square and Town Hall in the Historic Downtown area. Computer, laptop and handheld users are able to access the Internet 100% free of charge.
Although Summerville is known for its deep history, our leaders have always kept an eye on what’s coming up next, said Summerville Mayor Bill Collins. Internet access and the exchange of thoughts and ideas is a big part of what is driving our new economy, so we jumped at the chance to partner with the folks from Google – especially since this has been done with no cost to our taxpayers.
Google provided a community grant to operate and maintain the Wi-Fi network. In all, Google has provided more than $295,000 to create Wi-Fi hotspots across the Lowcountry.
Our big goal is to make it easier for everyone to find the information they need online, said Eric Wages, Google operations manager at the Berkeley County data center. Accessing the Internet is the first step and thanks to this relationship, people can take it for free in Downtown Summerville.
A group of students from Summerville High School cut the cord to officially make the area a wireless zone.
The Wi-Fi network is now live and available to the public. For more information, please visit http://summervillefreewifi.com.
