SCRA-Managed National Warheads and Energetics Consoritum Holds Annual Meeting

CHARLESTON, SC – July 9, 2012 – The National Warheads and EnergeticsConsortium (NWEC), managed by SCRA Applied R&D, recently held itsannual General Membership Meeting and Government Collaboration Day. Themeeting, held in early June, offered government, industry and academiaan opportunity to meet and exchange information relating to theresearch, development and deployment of ordnance technology.
NWEC is the industrial and academic component of the Department ofDefense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC). The two consortiums wereestablished to facilitate collaborative ordnance technology developmentand prototyping. The NWEC/DOTC Enterprise is unique in its ability toleverage the capabilities and investments of its participants, bothpublic and private, to rapidly deliver ordnance technology to thewarfighter.
Approximately 230 representatives from Government, Industry and Academicorganizations participated in the event, which focused on collaborationamong and between the participants. The event also provided an updateon the activities carried out by the NWEC over the past year. 112 of the205 NWEC member organizations from 28 states participated in the firstday session where the Government presented its challenges as they relateto Ordnance Technology. In addition, a series of one-on-one sessionswith the government representatives offered industry and academicattendees an opportunity to quickly engage with a number of governmentattendees on items of particular interest to their respectiveorganizations.
NWEC is one of many consortia – national and international programs andcollaborations between the federal government, private corporations andacademia – which SCRA Applied R&D manages. In addition to theordnance program, which is designed to maintain our technologicalsuperiority on the battlefield, other consortia areas of expertiseinclude: shipbuilding and maritime technologies, composites and advancedmaterials, manufacturing, software applications, agencyinteroperability and homeland security.
“The annual NWEC meeting was an ideal forum for information exchange andcollaboration,” said SCRA Applied R&D President Chris Van Metre. “Ilook forward to continued work on ordnance technologies to support theDepartment of Defense in ensuring our men and women in uniform have thehighest-caliber technologies to protect our country.”
