Spirituality and Medicine: Lecture in Pastoral Care Offered

Roper St. Francis hosts Dr. Koenig for first Fitzgerald Lecture Series Seminar
CHARLESTON, SC – March 19, 2012 – Community clergy, chaplains, students, and those working in healthcare are invited to the first lecture in the Richard H. Fitzgerald Lecture Series, which will feature Harold G. Koenig, MD, MHSc – a renowned expert on spirituality, theology and health. Dr. Koenig will discuss the role of spirituality in medicine, its impact on health and how pastoral or clinical caregivers can combine both for the betterment of patients. The lecture will be held Apr. 16, 2012 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, 2095 Henry Tecklenburg Drive, Charleston.

Dr. Koenig is founder and former director of Duke University’s Center for the Study of Religion, Spirituality and Health, and now directs Duke’s current Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health. He is a world-renowned researcher on the effects of religion on physical and mental health, and is board certified in general psychiatry and formerly board in geriatric psychiatry, geriatric medicine and family medicine. Dr. Koenig also serves on the Duke faculty as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Associate Professor of Medicine. He is also a registered nurse.
The Richard H. Fitzgerald Lecture Series was established in 2011 through a generous donation from Dr. Richard H. Fitzgerald, who served as the director of radiation oncology at Roper Hospital for 22 years.
