Local School Educator Works to Help All South Carolina Students

August 11, 2009

JOHN’S ISLAND, SC – August 11, 2009 – Dr. Fayrine Brown, founder of Capers Preparatory Christian Academy on John’s Is land, SC, is expanding her services to help students performing below basic level wherever they are located. She is now reaching out to parents and educators across the state through her educational consulting firm, Educational Therapy, LLC.

“Although there has been some improvement, South Carolina’s on-time graduation rate – ranked 37th in the U.S. – still lags behind the national average. We are changing that on John’s Island for some at-risk children who previously underperformed in their former school systems,” says Dr. Fayrine Brown. “Through my consulting services with Educational Therapy, LLC, I am helping parents and educators throughout the state employ proven methods that get students interested in school and life, improve academic performance, and remove behavioral problems.”

Dr. Brown founded Capers Prep School in 2003 to address the needs of local at-risk children who were not thriving in their former school systems. Since then, she has instilled excitement for learning in her students and achieved a 100 percent graduation rate, all of whom go on to attend college. She has been hailed by local media and the Wall Street Journal as forming a “great school” where the “students are interested in learning and happy to be there.” Since she often dips into her personal retirement and savings accounts to assist students and their families who have trouble paying tuition costs, she needs additional funding to keep the school thriving.

“What better way to help the students of John’s Island – and parents and students who are struggling all over South Carolina – than to take my knowledge to others,” says Dr. Brown. “I am often asked by parents and teachers to intervene on a child’s behalf, so I know the demand is there for educational consulting. And it has always been my passion to help students the way my teachers helped me when I was young, living in the projects with two alcoholic parents, and no way out except for education.”

“Coming to Capers has changed my life tremendously, not only in the classroom but outside of the classroom, too. Since I’ve been to Capers, I have been studying and working hard. When I was in public school, you could never tell me to study and work hard because to me that was a foreign language,” says 10th-grader Samone Johnson.

“I don’t like coming to Capers, I absolutely LOVE IT. I love it because we get that one-on-one time with the teachers if we need it. Not only do we get classroom education, we also get outside of the classroom education. We go on trips that for most of us are a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” continues Johnson.

“Dr. Brown is totally devoted to her students and provides the educational and supportive environment for them to succeed in sch ool and in life. She provides the toolbox these young people need to be their best, teaching them how to study, how to treat others, how to respect themselves and others, and how to believe in themselves!  She makes them realize they are important and they matter,” says Dr. Kim Collins, forensic pathologist at Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office and Emory University.

Educational Therapy, LLC is run by Dr. Fayrine Brown. She consults with both parents and educators to help students in grades K5-12 in public and private schools work through a four-step holistic process to inspire, motivate, and improve academic performance.

Dr. Brown also is a motivational speaker, focused on high school dropout reduction, what skills students should master and when, and how to help students succeed in the classroom. She can be reached at 843.670.1085.
