Richland One expanding 3K programs to six sites in 2022-2023 school year

March 30, 2022

Starting early is essential in ensuring that children have the skills they need to be ready for school.

As part of its school readiness initiatives, Richland One will expand its full-day pre-kindergarten programs for 3-year-olds (3K) to six sites in the 2022-2023 school year. Gadsden Elementary School is currently the only 3K site. Starting in August, 3K programs also will be offered at Bradley, Lewis Greenview, Hopkins, Hyatt Park and W.S. Sandel elementary schools.

“Increased school readiness is the intended outcome,” said Rhonda Wiley, Richland One’s director of early childhood education. “This expansion aligns with the district’s Strategic Plan goal of ensuring that students are reading at grade level when they are promoted to third grade. A key factor in meeting this goal is increased kindergarten readiness.”

Registration for the free 3K program is open for all six locations. To enroll for next year, students must be age three by Sept. 1, 2022. Students do not have to be zoned for one of the six schools to attend but, if transportation is needed, students will have to attend a designated school. Each school will serve Richland One students from surrounding areas in the district.

Parents must attend a parent information session, complete an application and submit new student registration requirements online to the Office of School Readiness and Pre-kindergarten Programs (OSRPP).

The same process should be followed to enroll in the 4K program, which is offered free throughout the district. Additionally, all students are assessed before acceptance letters are issued.
