September 19, 2022Heart Math Tutoring is looking for volunteer tutors to support 100 Charleston students during the 2022/23 school year! Signup today and make an impact in a child’s life with just 1 hour per week!
Heart Math Tutoring (“HMT”) is a nonprofit organization committed to helping students in elementary schools develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics. After completing a successful pilot program with Ladson Elementary, HMT is excited to expand its impact for Charleston students, and we need your help!
The Need for Math Support in Charleston
In the wake of COVID-19, just 54% of fourth grade students in Charleston County School District (CCSD) met or exceeded grade level expectations as of the 2022 SC College-and-Career-Ready Assessments. Tutoring has been found to deliver significant gains in recent studies and was recommended in the January 2021 report by the SC Education Oversight Committee upon reviewing South Carolina students’ academic needs exacerbated by the pandemic.
As an HMT tutor, your addition makes a difference! A Charlotte-based program since 2013, HMT piloted its first school site in Charleston during Spring 2022. In just four months, 100% of HMT students at Ladson Elementary (CCSD) met or exceeded program growth goals in math. 100% of Heart volunteers rated the experience positive, and 100% of teachers reported they saw improvement in their students’ confidence and enthusiasm for learning on a year-end survey. Volunteering with Heart Math Tutoring
HMT volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions that last either 30 minutes or one hour from October to April (~20-25 sessions). Not a “math person”? Not a problem! Advanced math knowledge and tutoring experience are not required. All students are in grades 1-5, and Heart provides a structured, activity-based curriculum with on-site support at every session. If you can do basic math and have a passion for helping kids, you can tutor with HMT.
Volunteer opportunities are available at two schools in Charleston County this year. We invite you to check out our school locations and available tutoring times.
Recruit A Tutor
If you’ve already signed up to tutor, thank you for giving some of your time to students this year. We would love your help in recruiting friends, family, and colleagues to volunteer alongside you! Each additional volunteer means another student will receive high-quality, individualized math intervention. Check out our Volunteer Recruitment Kit for outreach ideas!
For employers and civic groups, HMT Charleston team members would be happy to host an information session for interested employees and members. Should that be of interest, please contact [email protected].
Heart Math Tutoring
Heart Math Tutoring is a Charlotte-based nonprofit with a mission to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Community members commit one hour per week to deliver an effective, hands-on curriculum through one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day in elementary schools. Heart focuses its support on students who lack resources to access private tutoring. In 2022, Heart launched its first new geography in Charleston, SC.
