Bon Secours is proud to participate in the upcoming National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative on Saturday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A collection event will be held at the Bon Secours St. Francis Millennium campus, in front of the medical office building located at 2 Innovation Drive, Greenville.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide the community with a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of their unused or expired prescription medication. It’s also a chance to educate the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

“As we go about our lives, we all inevitably end up with a collection of expired or no longer needed medications. It’s incredibly important to dispose of those drugs properly to limit the impact to the environment and to reduce the risk of accidental poisonings. Drug Take Back Day serves as an opportunity for us all to do our part to take care of the Earth and all its inhabitants,” said Matthew Timmons, clinical pharmacy specialist with Bon Secours St. Francis.

Experts caution unwanted or expired medications should never be flushed as it is harmful to the environment. Medication take-back programs provide a disposal option that is safe and environmentally friendly. Note that while some individuals prefer to remove the label from their medication containers before turning them in, this is not required.

Additional tips on what to consider when dropping off medications include:

• Accepted medications include vitamins, pills, and pet medications. We cannot accept needles, inhalers, liquids, lotions, aerosols, ointments, and creams.
• While many use this service for their own medications, it’s also helpful for families and caregivers who need a safe place to dispose of medications for loved ones.
