“Warming Up for Winter“ Offers Coats, Hats, Gloves, Flu Shots and More in Columbia, South Carolina on Nov. 16, 2023

Select Health of South Carolina’s First Choice health plan wants South Carolinians to be prepared for the cooler weather and so it is hosting a “Warming Up for Winter” event. Along with community partners, Select Health will give away hats, gloves, and new and gently used coats at no cost to attendees while quantities last. In addition, flu shots will be provided by Walgreens for adults 18 years and older with photo ID and valid health insurance cards. There will be activities for children and light refreshments will be served. Select Health’s bilingual staff will assist Spanish-speaking families, and interpretation services will be available. Community organizations will be there to provide attendees with helpful resources.

Why
Select Health’s aim is to protect area residents from the cold with winter clothing donated by local companies and houses of worship. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone six months and older get vaccinated against the flu. Vaccination to prevent flu is particularly important for people who are at increased risk of complications from flu, including young children, adults aged 50 years and older, pregnant women and people with certain chronic medical conditions.
