Laurens County School District 55 Named District Administration National Awards of Distinction Program Finalist
December 6, 2023Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is thrilled to announce that it is a finalist of the esteemed District Administration (DA) National Awards of Distinction Program.
District Administration shares district success stories among districts. Information from DA helps district leaders make informed decisions that can lead to increased student achievement.
The DA’s National Awards Program honors outstanding K-12 school districts and visionary leaders. This prestigious program aims to recognize and celebrate innovative initiatives that have delivered measurable results, revolutionizing education within school districts.
The DA Districts of Distinction celebrates remarkable, home-grown programs that can inspire educators to replicate such programs. Finalists and winners are considered pioneers of significantly impactful educational initiatives. They are successful models that can empower other districts and help cultivate student engagement, student achievement, and student excellence throughout the United States.
LCSD 55’s College and Career Programs, collectively known as LEAP (Laurens Education/Employment Alternative Pathways), has been named a DA District of Distinction Finalist. LEAP is a data-driven initiative that showcases the district’s commitment to addressing the shortage of qualified professionals in critical sectors and providing options for students who have financial and or physical/mental barriers in pursuing higher education. The district’s initiative is built on strong partnerships with surrounding colleges (Piedmont Technical College and Presbyterian College).
The innovative nature of the specialized programs (Emergency Medical Technicians, Fire Science, 2+2 Education Degree Pathway, and Project SEARCH) and progressive educational environment set it apart as a District of Distinction. This forward-thinking approach prepares students early to explore careers and meet the evolving needs of the community. It equips students with the necessary skills for future careers. This initiative bridges the gap between high school education and professional pathways. Through these programs, students gain valuable knowledge and skills at an early age, have the opportunity to earn college credits and professional certifications, and gain hands-on experience while still in high school. Project SEARCH promotes equity for students with disabilities. Through partnerships with Laurens PRISMA Health, SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department, and other agencies, students with disabilities are prepared for and welcomed as part of the workforce. The initiative promotes a cultural revolution in workplaces and celebrates the contributions of students with different abilities.
Dr. Thomas said, “I am incredibly honored and humbled that our district has been recognized as a finalist for the District Administration’s National Award Program District of Distinction. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such an exceptional district and proud of the achievements we have made together.
