Student Innovation Center invites public to adapted Toy Workshop

October 21, 2024

Participants will learn how to adapt toys for students with disabilities.

The Student Innovation Center @ R2i2, along with the Assistive Technology Program through the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, will hold an Adapted Toy Workshop on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7-8, 2024. The workshop will take place at the Student Innovation Center, located at 763 Fashion Drive in Columbia, from 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. each day.

The purpose of this event is to adapt interactive battery-operated toys for children with disabilities. R2i2 Student Innovation Center Instructor Nic Jones and his students have designed and produced switches for toys making it easier for children with disabilities to enjoy. Adaptive toys can help create an inclusive play environment, promoting learning, engagement, and development for children.

During the workshops, Jones, his students, and staff from the S.C. Assistive Technology Program will teach family members, professionals, school staff and media representatives how to adapt toys. Participants should bring their own battery-operated toys that have an on/off switch and only one action. All participants will leave with their toy adapted for switch use and a switch to operate it.

This is a free event and open to the public. For more information, contact Student Innovation Center Director Alan J. Wolf, 803-738-3227, or USC Fiscal Technician Janet Lambert, 803-935-5263.

The safety and security of our students, employees, and visitors to our campuses in our number one priority. Metal detector safety screenings will be conducted for everyone entering the Student Innovation Center.
