Denmark Technical College holds Second Annual President’s Tie Tying Celebration to empower students for professional success

October 24, 2024

On October 16, Denmark Technical College hosted its second annual President’s Tie Tying Celebration. This unique event is part of the college’s mission to engage, educate and empower students, many of whom come from underserved communities, with the professional and life skills necessary for success beyond the classroom.

The celebration focused on teaching students the often-overlooked yet critical skill of tying a tie, an essential part of professional attire that can boost confidence and make a strong impression as they enter the workforce.

“At Denmark Technical College, we recognize that for many of our students mastering basic professional skills like tying a tie can be transformative,” said Willie L. Todd Jr., Ph.D., president and CEO. “As an HBCU, we proudly serve a community that has historically faced limited access to certain resources. By offering these hands-on experiences, we ensure that our students are not only academically prepared but are also equipped with the tools they need to present themselves confidently in any professional setting. Small things can make a big difference when stepping into the workforce.”

During the event, each student received a tie in the college’s signature blue, which they can keep and add to their professional wardrobe.

“At Denmark Technical College, we understand that for our students, education goes beyond the classroom. Many of our students come from backgrounds where they may not have been exposed to certain professional practices but that does not diminish their potential. We are here to fill those gaps and give them every possible advantage as they form their identity and work to become their highest version of themself,” said Dr. A. Clifton Myles, Ph.D., executive vice president for administration and innovation.

The tie tying event is just one component of Denmark Technical College’s larger career readiness initiative, which seeks to address the gaps that many underserved students face when entering professional environments. Through the Panther Pathways program, a cornerstone of the Department of Career and Student Success, DTC is committed to providing wraparound support that includes everything from academic tutoring to personal development.

“Our students are intelligent, resilient and capable. We just need to ensure they have all the tools necessary to shine. Whether it’s learning how to tie a tie or perfecting a resume, these are crucial skills that are often missed. We are here to help them make the transition from college to career seamless,” said Leslie Holman-Brooks, executive director rector of career and student success.

Staff and student tie tying participants

After some basic instruction, faculty and staff worked with the students one-on-one and in small groups as they practiced and mastered their new skill. Many team members shared personal stories about their own early professional experiences and offered career advice, creating a supportive, encouraging environment for learning. The event concluded with some inspirational affirmations from the president, followed by a shared meal among the students and mentors.

“This is about more than learning to tie a tie. It’s about building confidence and equipping our students with the tools they need to thrive in the professional landscape. We are setting them up not just for jobs, but for careers, for leadership and for life,” said Todd.
