Clinton City Council Recap – August 4, 2025

August 5, 2025

Clinton City Council convened Monday evening with several updates, citizen concerns, and ordinance approvals shaping the agenda.

New Leadership in Public Works
The meeting began with the formal introduction of Randy Tuttle as the new Public Works Director for the City of Clinton.

Community Feedback and Recognition
During the public comment period:

Susan Galloway of Clinton Canopy shared how the group utilized funds for their Daffodils for Remembrance project near the city’s new park pavilions.
Onitsha Goldsmith, co-founder of Commission Global Network and The Go Center, expressed appreciation to the city for a $1,200 community assistance grant.
Narmeen Abojamoos, owner of House of Pizza, voiced frustration after being denied permission four times to install a sign identical to the one previously approved for their former business, which was lost in a fire. “This sign is about advertising, being seen, being known, and staying open,” she told Council, adding that the current location lacks lighting and security cameras.

Board Vacancies and Appointments
Three seats remain vacant on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Council unanimously approved Harriet Grant as the Ward 2 representative, following last month’s appointment of Charlie Gustofson as an at-large member. Appointments for Wards 1 and 4 will be made at a future meeting.

August Proclamations Approved
Two proclamations were approved, recognizing August as:

Back to School Month, and Connecting Cops and Communities Month.

In response to Councilwoman Williams’ inquiry about police-led events, Chief Michael Addison shared that activities may align with National Night Out later in the month, depending on weather conditions.

Annexation and Zoning Changes
Council approved two ordinances on first reading:

Annexation of Property near Food Lion: The property on the southeast side of Highway 56 South, adjacent to Dollar Tree, was approved for annexation. Greenwood Hospital Board has purchased an additional 1.01 acres behind the front parcel for a proposed medical facility.

Zoning Amendment for Lydia Mill Area: Approximately o.33 acres at Poplar and Peach Streets (previously used by the Home Store) will now be zoned for office, retail, personal, and business services use.

Sunday Sales and Infrastructure Updates
Council gave second reading approval to an ordinance allowing blue law purchases on Sundays for the next six months, in accordance with state guidelines.

City Manager Joey Meadors informed the public that the work underway along North Broad and Florida Streets is part of a pipe repair project funded by a Rural Infrastructure Grant.
