SME Upstate Chapter revitalizes manufacturing excellence in Upstate South Carolina with innovative educational initiatives
August 21, 2025The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Upstate Chapter #164 is experiencing a significant revitalization, focusing on strengthening the manufacturing community in Upstate South Carolina through enhanced networking opportunities and innovative educational programs. The chapter’s flagship initiative, the IDEA DRIVE 2025: CO2 Dragster Derby Competition, launched at the SC Automotive Summit, marks a new chapter in the organization’s commitment to advancing manufacturing technology and developing the future workforce.
“Our chapter is dedicated to empowering both students and professionals to lead future manufacturing innovations,” said Bryan Dods, FSME, past Chair of SME Upstate Chapter #164. “Through initiatives like the IDEA Racing (previously known as the CO2 Dragster Derby), we’re creating hands-on learning experiences that inspire the next generation of manufacturing leaders while strengthening connections between industry and education.”
The IDEA Racing Competition targets universities, high schools, and middle schools with Math, Engineering, and STEAM programs. The program features a portable track with electronic timing devices, allowing for preliminary events that lead to larger annual competitions. The initiative was officially introduced at the SC Automotive Summit. Keith Joyner achieved the fastest response time, showcasing the program’s potential to engage students in practical applications of engineering principles.
The chapter has organized several notable events to foster professional development and industry connections under the leadership of Chair Sarah Curnow, VP Josh Diaz, Treasurer Chad Raynes, Secretary Rainge Dockster, and Corporate Advisor Dan Sage. Recent activities include plant tours at Sargent Metal Fabricators, focusing on operational processes and best practices, the Bosch USA Anderson facility during Manufacturing Day celebrations, SC Auto Summit (IDEA Racing Demo), Autokiniton and United Catalyst Corporation presentations and tours.
“We’re building a community where manufacturing professionals can exchange ideas, share best practices, and collectively advance our industry,” said Andy Henderson, PhD. “Our plant tours and technical meetings provide valuable insights into cutting-edge manufacturing processes while creating networking opportunities for our members.”
SME Upstate Chapter #164 is growing and continues to implement several strategies to enhance membership and engagement, including community outreach to local educational institutions and professional development opportunities through technical meetings, plant tours, and skills competitions.
The chapter’s focus on initiatives like the IDEA Racing and educational outreach positions it for significant growth. Their commitment to fostering innovation and education in manufacturing, combined with active community engagement, creates a strong foundation for future expansion and impact in the Upstate South Carolina region.
