City of Columbia Advertisement of Vacancies on various boards and commissions

The City of Columbia is currently seeking individuals to serve on a variety of boards and commissions that help shape the future of our community. These volunteer opportunities offer residents a meaningful way to contribute their expertise, passion, and perspectives to important decisions that impact the city’s growth, development, and quality of life.

Residents who live within city limits are encouraged to apply for the following available positions:

Board of Zoning Appeals – 1 vacancy / 3-year term

The purpose of the Board of Zoning Appeals (BoZA) is to review requests for variances, special exceptions, and other zoning appeals, in accordance with the Unified Development Ordinance and to support the City of Columbia’s ongoing planning efforts, growth, and land development.

Building Board of Appeals – 7 vacancies / 2-year term

The purpose of the Building Board of Appeals (BBA) is to hear and decide appeals of orders, decisions, or determinations made by the building official relative to the application and interpretation of the building code.

Historic Preservation/Design Review Commission – 7 vacancies / 3-year term

The purpose of the Historic Preservation Design Review Commission (HP/DRC) is to administer historic preservation guidelines and to plan and direct continuing studies of areas, structures, objects, and other considerations relating to historic preservation in furtherance of the Unified Development Ordinance.

Planning Commission – 2 vacancies / 3-year term

The purpose of the Planning Commission (PC) is to support the City of Columbia’s ongoing planning efforts, growth, and land development in accordance with the Unified Development Ordinance.

Property Maintenance Board of Appeals – 7 vacancies / 3-year term

The purpose of the Property Maintenance Board of Appeals (PMBoA) is to hear appeals to decisions made by the Director of Code Enforcement or to a notice of violation of the International Property Maintenance Code. Members also hear and decide on appeals involving the city’s Rental, Vacant Building and Nuisance Ordinances.

Urban / Design Review Commission – 5 vacancies / 3-year term)

The purpose of the Urban Design Review Commission (U/DRC) is to administer the urban design guidelines, and to plan and direct continuing studies of areas, physical features and improvements in the city relating to urban design, beautification, civic improvement and other considerations in furtherance of the Unified Development Ordinance.
