CCSD Associate Superintendent Dr. Shavonna Coakley receives 2026 Beta Mu Sigma Education Award

January 8, 2026

Charleston County School District (CCSD) announced that Dr. Shavonna Coakley, Associate Superintendent for School Support, Community Engagement, and Alternative Programs, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Beta Mu Sigma Education Award, presented by the Beta Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Dr. Coakley was recognized for her outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to CCSD scholars, schools, and communities. Through her leadership of the Department of School Support and oversight of all Alternative Programs across the district, she ensures that schools, regardless of classification, receive the guidance and support needed to maintain equitable, student-centered disciplinary practices, reduce chronic absenteeism, and expand access to educational opportunities for students requiring alternative placements.

A defining feature of Dr. Coakley’s leadership is her “Boots on the Ground” approach to community engagement. She played a key role in establishing CCSD Listening Sessions across all former constituent district areas, creating opportunities for families and community members to engage directly with district leadership, including Superintendent Anita Huggins. These sessions reflect CCSD’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and shared responsibility for student success.

“Dr. Coakley is a leader who listens first, leads with integrity, and never loses sight of the students we serve,” said Anita Huggins, Superintendent of Charleston County School District. “Her work strengthens schools, builds trust with our communities, and reflects the values that move our district forward. We are incredibly proud of her and grateful for the impact she continues to make across CCSD.”

“Dr. Coakley expressed appreciation for the recognition and emphasized the collective effort behind the work. “I am honored and grateful to receive this award,” said Dr. Coakley. “This recognition belongs to the many educators, staff members, and community partners who work alongside me every day. I am especially thankful for the teams within the Department of School Support, the Department of Exceptional Learning, the Department of Student Support Services, and our colleagues across CCSD who remain committed to listening, learning, and doing what is best for our scholars.”
