A Glorious Cause: Victoria A. Smalls discusses the Social & Cultural Life of Gullah People in the SC Lowcountry during the Revolutionary Era

On Thursday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the Southern Georgetown Library (4187 Powell Road, Georgetown, SC 29440), as part of “A Glorious Cause,” Victoria A. Smalls will explore the social and cultural life of Gullah people in the South Carolina Lowcountry during the Revolution. Smalls, a Gullah Geechee native of Saint Helena Island, South Carolina, is CEO of Smalls Cultural Resources, where she champions Gullah Geechee committees and their global connections to the African diaspora. Her previous professional experiences and honors include serving as a federal Commissioner on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission as well as Executive Director of the Gullah Geechee National Heritage Area, and receiving the 2024 Governor’s Award in Humanities.
The Georgetown County Library (GCL) will host a series of 20 public educational programs and exhibits as part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative of the Georgetown County Library.” The programs, which will be free and open to the public, will take place at each of GCL’s 5 facilities across Georgetown County from March 2026 through June 2026. The project is made possible by a $39,300 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL).
