A Child’s Haven celebrates the Grand Opening of Parent-Child Interaction Garden

June 21, 2018

A Child’s Haven celebrated the Grand Opening of The Joy in Childhood Foundation Parent-Child Interaction Garden with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, June 1, 2018. Our garden project incorporates the Parents as Teachers parent education model and promotes healthy family interaction, nutritional eating habits, positive stress management strategies all while teaching parents how to create their own home garden.

Everyone involved in The Joy in Childhood Foundation Parent-Child Interaction Garden will also enjoy financial benefits as well. 50% of the produce yielded will be incorporated into the two healthy meals each child receives daily at A Child’s Haven. The remaining produce will be sent home with A Child’s Haven families to increase healthy food options and reduce their food costs.

Laurie Rovin, Executive Director of A Child’s Haven, reflected on the garden’s benefits, “Our new garden is a perfect fit for our parent education curriculum. It uses a hands-on strategy that pairs healthy eating with a fun way to maximize love and minimize stress, one of the key elements of Palmetto Basics.

Honored guests at the ceremony included The Joy in Childhood Foundation representative Monica Young; local Dunkin Donuts franchisee Ron Genie; A Child’s Haven participants,  The Campbell Family, one of the families who worked on the initial garden; Boy Scout Brooks O’Hanlan who adopted our garden as his Eagle Scout project; and Past President of the Board of Directors of A Child’s Haven Reid Sherard.

“Today could not have happened without the seed funding from the Joy in Childhood Foundation and the efforts of our project lead, Brooks O’Hanlan,” said Sherard.
