A Legacy of Service: Clinton Police Chief Sonny Ledda Bids Farewell After Two Decades of Service in Law Enforcement
September 23, 2024After a distinguished career spanning over two decades, Chief Socrates B. “Sonny” Ledda has announced his intention to retire from the Clinton Police Department, effective October 4, 2024. Chief Ledda’s departure marks the end of an era for the department and the community.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to Clinton City Manager Tom Brooks, Ledda expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, “It has been my honor to serve the citizens of Clinton and the men and women of the Clinton Police Department. The City of Clinton and the law enforcement profession has afforded me many opportunities for personal and professional growth which I feel has benefitted our friends and neighbors.”
Chief Ledda’s leadership philosophy has been characterized by professionalism, compassion, and commitment to community service. His leadership provided and nurtured a sense of professionalism and an atmosphere which empowered and encouraged growth. These values were instrumental in shaping the culture of the department and in fostering a strong relationship with the community.
Throughout his tenure, Ledda has been a staunch advocate for integrity and accountability. He emphasized, “I expect everyone to conduct their personal and professional lives in such a way as to always bring credit to themselves, fellow officers, and the law enforcement profession.” His commitment to these principles earned him respect from colleagues and community members alike.
A veteran of the Gulf War and former police chief in multiple South Carolina cities—including Bishopville, Laurens, and then Clinton—Ledda dedicated his life to law enforcement and public service. His extensive training includes completion of the FBI National Academy and various leadership programs, which equipped him with the skills necessary to lead effectively.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ledda has been deeply involved in community initiatives. His roles with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the United Way illustrate his commitment to making Clinton a better place to live. “I am deeply indebted to my family, friends, and colleagues who supported me in this noble profession,” he reflected.
