A M King breaks ground on ALDI divisional HQ and distribution center
February 25, 2021Carolinas-based A M King, an integrated Design-Build Firm with an established presence in the Upstate, has partnered with ALDI U.S. to provide property consulting, design, and construction of ALDI’s new facility in Loxley, AL. The 570,660-square-foot divisional headquarters and distribution center will service more than 100 stores in southern Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and the Florida panhandle.
ALDI has invested more than $5 billion in a major national growth campaign over the last several years and increased its selection of produce, meats and organic options. The company has also ramped up its eCommerce offering with Curbside Grocery Pickup, now available at 700 stores, and delivery in more than 10,000 ZIP codes – all without compromising its commitment to low prices.
“ALDI and A M King have a long and successful relationship,” said A M King’s Dan Crist, Vice President of Operations. “A M King’s full property consulting services were instrumental to ALDI as the company was contemplating a Gulf Coast expansion. We were charged with site selection and due diligence; and once the site was identified, ALDI and A M King immediately moved forward with design and construction of the facility.”
There are several design components that will facilitate social distancing. The building layout is open and unrestricted by hallways so that employees can have more separation as they move about. The circulation area at the main entrance lobby is a large two-story space that does not restrict the flow of employees entering or exiting the building. Lastly, A M King developed a 2,600-square-foot outdoor flexible workspace next to break rooms and open office areas, allowing workers the opportunity to separate themselves or provide a fresh air working environment when needed.
“More than 20 properties were considered for our Loxley site but very few met the necessary criteria that would allow us to build the most innovative ALDI warehouses to date,” said Adam Kastl, director of warehouse development at ALDI U.S. “The building will include several sustainable initiatives, like solar panels, LED lighting, outdoor flexible workspace and more to ensure our operations are as productive as possible while maintaining our standards of safety and well-being for employees.”
Aldi’s 150-acre site is located just north of Interstate 10, conveniently located between Mobile, AL. and Pensacola, FL. and 25 miles from Gulf Shores, AL.
