A record-breaking sea turtle release for the South Carolina Aquarium

Aquarium Celebrates 43 Sea Turtles Released This Year, Surpassing Previous Record of 39

After nearly 25 years of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured sea turtles, the South Carolina Aquarium has reached a new record. The recent return of Bagel, Bao, Crumpet and Sausage to the “big blue” marks the release of 43 sea turtles in 2024, surpassing the Aquarium’s previous record of 39 releases within a single year. This record is a testament to the dedicated biologists, veterinarians, volunteers, transporters, rescuers and visitors to the Aquarium, every one of which directly helps to support the Aquarium’s conservation work both within their walls and beyond.

“This achievement is incredibly meaningful to us. Each turtle released represents countless hours of care and commitment to giving these animals a second chance,” said Melissa Ranly, Sea Turtle Care Center™ manager. “With all seven sea turtle species classified as threatened or endangered, every individual rescues, rehabilitated and returned to the wild adds hope for the survival of these ancient creatures. Knowing our work could contribute to the longevity of these species is truly inspiring.”

The four turtles were released into the calm, warm saltmarsh waters from a boat, marking the end of a months-long recovery journey. Kemp’s ridley sea turtles Bagel, Crumpet and Sausage, along with green sea turtle Bao, were cared for extensively by the Aquarium, attracting many visitors and members who followed their recovery with enthusiasm.

Currently, seven sea turtles are still recovering in the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Care Center, with each visitor’s support directly aiding in their rehabilitation and hopeful release.
