Abney Scholars Program recognizes Lander students’ achievements

For Brett Gregory, having a scholarship from the Abney Scholars Program at Lander University relieves the financial burden often associated with college.

Gregory, who joined nearly 70 students from Lander receiving Abney Scholars awards at a reception with leaders of The Abney Foundation, discussed how the scholarship has shaped his academic career.

“It is wonderful to have the chance to thank them personally,” said Gregory, a junior majoring in business, with an emphasis in marketing and management, and political science. “I can pursue my studies without financial stress. I’m hoping to study abroad before graduating.”

Gregory has an internship in human resources at the Burton Center, has earned Dean’s List honors and is preparing to present a research paper at Lander’s upcoming Student Academic Symposium. He’s also been immersed in numerous student life activities, including the Political Science Association and Anime-niacs.

“Lander is what you choose to get out of it,” said Gregory, of Spartanburg. “There are many clubs and organizations to be involved in, and this is the place where you can make lifelong friends while preparing for your future.”

Carl Edwards, executive director emeritus of The Abney Foundation, led the organization when the scholarships were established in 1990 at Lander. “It is amazing to see the difference the scholarship program has made in the lives of young people over the years. The impact these scholarships has had on students and their futures is tremendous.”

To date, more than $1.7 million has been awarded to Lander students.

Talking with the students about their college experiences is particularly meaningful to the foundation’s leaders, said Dr. Lisa McWherter, executive director and vice chair of The Abney

Foundation Board of Directors.

“We are thrilled to have even a small part of their academic journey,” McWherter said. “Their studies are part of their success, and we are grateful to have a role in their futures.”
