Advertisement of vacancies on various boards and commissions

The City of Columbia is accepting applications to fill several vacancies on the following boards and commissions.

Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee

Seeking three (3) Applicants from the Hospitality industry; one (1) Applicant from the Lodging industry; one (1) Applicant who are considered At-Large businesspersons and one (1) Applicant from the Hospitality industry.

The purpose of this committee is to review applications submitted for Accommodations Tax funding and make recommendations to Columbia City Council. Applicant must reside/work within City Limits. Term – 2 years.

Board of Zoning Adjustments & Appeals

Seeking one (1) Re-Appointment/Appointment.

The purpose of the Board is to hear applications for variances to the development standards of the Zoning Ordinance, for special exceptions, and for administrative appeals where a person claims that the Zoning Administrator has erred in the enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance. In making a decision about an application, Board members apply criteria outlined within the Zoning Ordinance. The Board does not act as a recommending body to City Council; instead appeals of decisions of the Board are heard in Circuit Court. Term – 3 years.

Board of Zoning Appeals- Form Based Codes

Seeking one (1) Applicant. Applicant should be a Landscape or Urban Planner.

The purpose of the board of zoning appeals—form based codes is to hear requests for variances and decide appeals when it is alleged that there is error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the zoning administrator or the consolidated review committee. Applicant must reside/work within City Limits.

Term – 3 years.

Climate Protection Action Committee

Seeking 2 (two) applicants. 

Identify measures that can be taken to reduce greenhouse gases. CPAC was initiated to impact climate change, but now also serves as the City’s unofficial environmental clearing house, focusing on air quality, energy conservation, water conservation and recycling/waste reduction. Term – 2 years.

Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission

Seeking one (1) Applicant. 

The Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission has the following powers and duties: To review and recommend policies and ordinances affecting the planting, removal and preservation of trees on public and private property; provide advice on the allocation of resources and policies for the planting, care and removal of trees in the City of Columbia; serve as an advisory body to the City Forestry and Beautification Superintendent in the administration of this article; review and make recommendations related to the City Forestry and Beautification Division’s annual work plan and any comprehensive urban forestry or reforestation plans; provide public education and advocacy on tree value, preservation and care; make recommendations to City Council on disbursements of the Columbia Landscape and Tree Fund; oversee the development and implementation of a master plan for the beautification of the City of Columbia; and advise the City and its boards and commissions regarding landscaping, tree planting, protection and removal.

CTAC helps sponsor the annual Arbor Day celebration, Treasured Tree program and Columbia Choice Awards. Term- 3 years

Commercial Revolving Loan Fund

Seeking five (5) Applicants for Re-Appointment/Appointment.

Individuals applying for this board must be a small business owner, attorney and or commercial banker. Review and approve/disapprove applications for loans from the City of Columbia Commercial Revolving Loan Program. Term – 2 years.

Food Policy Committee 

Seeking 4 (four) Applicants for Appointment.

The purpose of this committee is gather and address problems found within food production, consumption, processing, distribution, and waste disposal with the primary focus on finding solutions to problems that promote sustainability, economic development, and social justice in the food system of the Columbia and surrounding areas by educating government officials about issues of the food system, making policy recommendations, research, fostering of cooperation among private, public, and non-profit interests. City Council has the final vote on approval or disapproval of recommendations. Term – 2 years.

River Alliance

Seeking one (1) Applicant for Appointment. Applicant must reside within city limits.

The purpose of The River Alliance (the “Alliance” or “Corporation”) shall be to maximize the benefits derived from the assets of the Broad, Congaree, and Saluda Rivers for the citizens of the Central Midlands Metropolitan Area of South Carolina, and to do all things necessary or convenient, and not inconsistent with law, to further these goals. Term – 3 years.

Transportation Penny Advisory Committee

Seeking one (1) Applicant. 

The mission of the Transportation Penny Advisory Committee will be to review, comment on, and provide recommendations on the Transportation Penny to Richland County Council.They will meet on a quarterly basis and may call special meetings as needed. Applicant must reside within the city limits. Term – 5 years.
