African American Cemeteries Restoration Project to Launch in Charleston

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg launched. the African American Cemeteries Restoration Project on Saturday, March 13, 2021.

The Cemeteries Restoration Fund, which will be maintained by The Gullah Society, will be used to support the restoration of historically significant African-American burial sites throughout the Lowcountry.

During the press conference, an announcement was made regarding the discovery of two gravestones belonging to Samuel Ferguson and Pompey Grant, two formerly enslaved individuals who served in the United States Colored Troops, which was established by the War Department in 1863.
